There have been two players named Adrian Smith who have played in the NBA.
The first Adrian Smith was born on December 5, 1936, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, and played college basketball at Kentucky. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the 3rd round of the 1961 NBA draft. He played for the Royals from 1961 to 1966, and then played for the San Francisco Warriors from 1966 to 1968. He was a point guard and known for his excellent ball-handling skills and quickness. During his career, he averaged 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1962 and was a two-time NBA All-Star in 1966 and 1967. He retired from the NBA in 1968 and went on to coach high school basketball in Kentucky.
The second Adrian Smith was born on January 10, 1986, in Chicago, Illinois, and played college basketball at Independence Community College and at Southern Illinois University. He went undrafted in the 2008 NBA draft and played for several years in the NBA G League and overseas before finally making his NBA debut with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016. He played in 3 games for the Pelicans before being waived. He then signed with the Memphis Grizzlies and played in 4 games for them before being waived again. He was later signed by the Milwaukee Bucks and played in 1 game for them before being waived for the third time in the same season. He then went back to playing in the G League and overseas.
Off the court, not much is known about the personal lives of either Adrian Smith. However, the first Adrian Smith was involved in a controversial trade in 1966, where he was traded by the Royals to the San Francisco Warriors for the rights to draft Rick Barry. This trade was protested by the NBA Players Association as they felt Smith was worth more than just the draft rights to Barry. Eventually, the NBA Commissioner voided the trade, and Smith played one more season with the Royals before being traded to the Warriors.
Overall, while both Adrian Smiths may not have had long or illustrious NBA careers, they both still managed to make an impact in their own way. The first Adrian Smith was a solid point guard who made two NBA All-Star teams and the second Adrian Smith was a player who persevered through years of playing in the G League and overseas before finally getting a chance to play in the NBA.
