Hannum played college basketball at USC and was drafted by the St. Louis Bombers in the second round of the 1948 BAA draft. Hannum played in the BAA/NBA from 1949 to 1957 for five different teams, including the Rochester Royals, Syracuse Nationals, Baltimore Bullets, Fort Wayne Pistons, and Minneapolis Lakers. He was a solid forward and played in the league during a time when the competition was fierce. Hannum averaged 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game over his nine-year career.

After his playing days were over, Hannum turned to coaching and became one of the most successful coaches in NBA history. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Syracuse Nationals in 1958 and was promoted to head coach the following season. He led the Nationals to the NBA championship in 1955 as a player and again in 1959 as a coach. Hannum later coached the San Francisco Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Hawks. He is perhaps best known for leading the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers to a 68-13 regular season record and an NBA championship, led by Wilt Chamberlain.

Hannum was known as a no-nonsense coach who demanded discipline and teamwork from his players. He was also one of the first coaches to emphasize defense, which helped his teams win championships.
