Branch went on to play college basketball at the University of Maryland, where he was a standout player for the Terrapins from 1982-1985. During his senior year, he averaged 23.1 points per game and was named ACC Player of the Year.
Branch was selected in the second round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls but was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He played for the Lakers for two seasons from 1985-1987 and was a member of the team that won the NBA Championship in 1987. After leaving the Lakers, Branch played briefly for the Seattle SuperSonics and the Sacramento Kings before embarking on a career overseas. He played in various countries, including Spain, Italy, and the Philippines, before retiring from basketball in 1997.
Branch has remained involved in basketball after his playing career. He has worked as a basketball analyst for ESPN and other networks, and he has also worked as a motivational speaker and author.
