There is only one player named Adrian Dantley in the NBA history. He is a retired American professional basketball player who played for the Buffalo Braves, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, and Dallas Mavericks during his NBA career.
Dantley was born on February 28, 1955, in Washington, D.C. He played college basketball at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a two-time consensus All-American and the leading scorer in the country during his senior year. In 1976, he was drafted sixth overall by the Buffalo Braves but was traded to the Indiana Pacers after just 23 games.
Dantley had a successful rookie season with the Pacers, averaging 20.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-Rookie First Team and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. He spent four seasons with the Pacers before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1981.
Dantley was traded again midway through the 1982-83 season to the Utah Jazz, where he had some of the best seasons of his career. He led the league in scoring during the 1983-84 season, averaging 30.6 points per game, and was named to the All-NBA First Team. He continued to be a dominant scorer for the Jazz, leading them to seven playoff appearances in his nine seasons with the team.
In 1989, Dantley was traded to the Detroit Pistons, where he won his only NBA championship in 1990. He played for the Pistons for two and a half seasons before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1991. He retired after playing just 23 games for the Mavericks during the 1991-92 season.
Dantley finished his NBA career with impressive statistics, averaging 24.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. He was a six-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Second Team three times and the All-NBA First Team twice. He was also a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning with the U.S. men's basketball team in 1976 and 1984.
After retiring from basketball, Dantley became a basketball analyst for ESPN and worked as an assistant coach for several NBA teams, including the Denver Nuggets and the Brooklyn Nets. He was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Off the court, Dantley is known for his frugal lifestyle, which earned him the nickname "The Teacher" during his playing days. He has also been involved in several charitable organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
