Al Fleming was born on March 3, 1954, in New York City. He attended Niagara University and played college basketball for the Niagara Purple Eagles. During his college career, Fleming was a standout player, averaging 26.2 points per game and earning All-American honors in his senior year.
After his college career, Fleming was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1977 NBA draft. He played for the 76ers during the 1977-78 season, appearing in 39 games and averaging 4.8 points per game. He also played for the New Jersey Nets during the 1979-80 season, appearing in 36 games and averaging 3.2 points per game.
Fleming's professional basketball career was not limited to the NBA. He also played in several other leagues, including the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), the Italian League, and the Israeli League. Fleming had a successful career in the CBA, winning two championships and being named the league's MVP in 1982.
After his playing career, Fleming worked as a coach and scout for several NBA teams. He was an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 1995 to 1999 and the Indiana Pacers from 1999 to 2003. He also worked as a scout for the New Jersey Nets and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Tragically, Al Fleming passed away on December 23, 2013, at the age of 59. He was remembered fondly by his former teammates and colleagues for his positive attitude and love for the game of basketball.
