There have been two players named Al Guokas in the NBA history, but both are better known for their careers as coaches.

The first Al Guokas was born on March 7, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia and played college basketball for the Hawks. After college, Guokas was selected by the Philadelphia Warriors in the third round of the 1956 NBA draft. He played for the Warriors during the 1956-57 season, appearing in 20 games and averaging 1.5 points per game.

Following his brief playing career, Guokas became a successful NBA coach. He served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers before becoming head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics in 1976. He led the SuperSonics to the playoffs in his first season as head coach but was fired midway through his second season.

Guokas then returned to the assistant coaching ranks, working for the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and Orlando Magic. He served as head coach of the Magic for part of the 1996-97 season before being replaced by Chuck Daly. Guokas retired from coaching in 1999.

The second Al Guokas, Al Guokas Jr., was born on December 21, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also attended Saint Joseph's University and played college basketball for the Hawks. After college, Guokas was selected by the Syracuse Nationals in the fifth round of the 1967 NBA draft. He played for the Nationals and the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1967-68 season, appearing in 22 games and averaging 3.8 points per game.

Like his father, Guokas Jr. had a more successful career as a coach. He served as an assistant coach for several NBA teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, the Miami Heat, and the Orlando Magic. He was also head coach of the Magic for part of the 1999-2000 season. Guokas Jr. is perhaps best known for his work as a color commentator for NBA broadcasts, a role he held for over 30 years.

Both Al Guokas Sr. and Al Guokas Jr. had long and successful careers in the NBA, but it was their contributions as coaches that had the greatest impact on the league.
