He was born in Brooklyn, New York and played college basketball at the University of Maryland. King was drafted with the 10th overall pick in the 1981 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets. He spent his first four seasons with the Nets, where he was a solid scorer and helped lead the team to the playoffs in three of those seasons. King then spent one season with the Philadelphia 76ers and two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs before retiring in 1987. In his NBA career, he averaged 14.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
