Grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico,Alex Kirk was born on November 14, 1991. He attended Los Alamos High School before joining the University of New Mexico to play college basketball. During his college career, he played in 101 games, averaging 10.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.
Kirk signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2014 NBA Summer League, after going undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft. Later, he signed with the Cavaliers in September 2014, but he was waived in October and assigned to their G League affiliate, the Canton Charge. In December 2014, he was called up to the Cavaliers and played in his first NBA game on December 30, 2014, against the Atlanta Hawks.
