Al McGuire was an American basketball coach and former player who was born on September 7, 1928, and passed away on January 26, 2001. It is worth noting that Al McGuire is more commonly known as a basketball coach rather than as a player. McGuire played college basketball at St. John's University in New York and was later drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 1951 NBA draft. He played just one season in the NBA before retiring as a player to pursue coaching. McGuire went on to have a successful coaching career, leading Marquette University to a national championship in 1977 and being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.
